This month we are looking at Bangladesh, the world’s 4th largest Muslim population.
Official Title: People’s Republic of Bangladesh
Language: Bangla (also known as Bengali), English
Population: 161,083,804 (July 2012 est.), 8th largest in the world. 0-14 years: 34.3%, 15-64 years: 61.1% with a median age of 23.3 years.
Economy: Per capita income in 2010 was est. US$1,700; noted as one of the Next Eleven economies; GDP US$269.3 billion, economy growth rate of 6-7% per annum. More than half of GDP is generated by the service sector; nearly half of Bangladeshis employed in the agriculture sector. Other goods produced are textiles, jute, fish, vegetables, fruit, leather and leather goods, ceramics.
Religion: Muslim 89.5%, Hindu 9.6%, other 0.9% (2004)
Geography: Located in southern Asia, bordering the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and India, Bangladesh covers 143,998 sq km, about the size of the US state of Iowa and 95th largest in the world. The country is dominated river deltas including the Ganges and Jamunna.
Government: Unitary state and parliamentary democracy
You might not know: Bangladesh is one of the top 20 most densely populated countries. Three Nobel laureates hail from Bangladesh (Muhammed Younus, Amartya Sen, Rabindranath Tagore). Nearly 10 million people share 800,000 internet connections the number of which is growing annually at 15-16%.
